Internships - Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities

Information about SGSAH Internships and Artist Residencies.

SGSAH organises paid research internships and artist residencies for PhD researchers to work with a partner host organisation, enabling you to enhance your research skills in a wide variety of contexts. 

These exciting opportunities give you the chance to make a difference to an organisation, whilst developing your skills, networks and CV to take you to the next stage of your career. 

Projects can be worked full time, part time or flexibly in blocks. We will pay you the equivalent of an UKRI stipend rate for the duration of your internship or residency and can help with travel and accommodation costs if these aren’t funded by your host organisation. The programme is open to arts and humanities PhD students in Scotland, regardless of funding source.

Applications for pre-organised research internships starting in 2027 are anticipated to open in October 2026.


The programme is open to arts and humanities PhD students in Scotland, regardless of funding source. Any doctoral researcher that meets the following criteria can benefit from this programme:

  • You are registered at a SGSAH member HEI;
  • You are in 2nd or early in your 3rd year (full time equivalent) at 1 October 2026;
  • You are studying an arts and humanities discipline. The AHRC’s subject coverage is here;
  • You are eligible to work in the UK;
  • You have not already undertaken an internship or residency through SGSAH’s programme.
  • Some of these placements are within universities; you should not normally apply to your own university for an internship without previous approval from SGSAH, or to your existing industry partner if you are a CDA/ARCS researcher

We recognise there are some subjects where the AHRC and the ESRC share interests and responsibilities (as can be found here, pages 74-77. PhD students in these areas are eligible to apply for SGSAH-funded internships as long as they fulfil the eligibility criteria as above, and additionally, have not been funded for an internship through the UKRI in Scotland (ie through SGSSS). Students registered in social science disciplines/departments may therefore be eligible to apply; contact admin@sgsah.ac.uk for clarification.
