Meet Your Programme Director, Dr Gisli Vogler

"Hi, I'm Gisli, the new Programme Director for the CAHSS pathway of the International Foundation Programme.

I am originally from Munich, Germany. After spending years as an international student in the UK, I completed my PhD in Politics here at the University of Edinburgh. Since then, I have enjoyed teaching social sciences courses across the programme.

I'm really looking forward to meeting you all and helping you settle into your courses. I know starting university in a new country can feel like a big step, but we're here to support you throughout the programme and help you prepare for your future degree."

IFP Welcome Week & Induction Details

The IFP induction will take place at the University's Holyrood Campus from Monday 14 September at 9:00am BST.

The Welcome Week/ induction period will continue until Friday 18 September.

*Please note: It is essential that all IFP students attend all planned events during induction week to ensure they're adequately prepared for the first week of classes.

Teaching Block 1 classes will begin the week commencing Monday 21 September 2026.

International Check In

All IFP students must independently complete an in-person international check-in as soon as possible after arriving in Edinburgh.

You have time available during the IFP Welcome Week for you to complete the check-in, for example Monday afternoon after the induction session ends at around 12:30.

As appointments can fill up quickly, we strongly recommend booking your in-person appointment online in advance of your arrival in Edinburgh.

Hello! My name is Tatiana, and I’m one of two Student Advisers on the Student Support team here at the University's Centre for Open Learning.

Alongside my colleague, Suzanne, our team is a key part of the support network at the University and is your first point of contact for any enquiries allowing us to connect you to a range of student services. You can contact us when various circumstances affect your life and studies. It's important to seek advice at the earliest opportunity to make sure that you get the right support.

We can support, advise and guide you in relation to a range of different matters including (but not limited to): health, wellbeing, learning support, disabilities, finance, funding, and accommodation. We can also signpost you to the most appropriate service or source of support.

We are based in Paterson’s Land, G.17, and can offer meetings – in-person, online or on the phone, and we can also offer advice over e-mail.

All IFP students must complete an in-person international check-in as soon as possible after arriving in Edinburgh.

IFP Humanities & Social Science Pathway

Here is the recording from our info session 'Meet the IFP Teachers', which took place on Wednesday 14 January 2026.

Just a reminder that the 2026/27 IFP course in Teaching Block 1 ‘Foundation Humanities & Social Sciences’ will now be changing to two separate courses.

This means that instead of taking ‘Foundation Humanities & Social Sciences', you will take both 'Introduction to Studying Humanities' and ‘Introduction to Studying Social Sciences’.

IFP Example Timetable - Humanities & Social Science Pathway

We've included two different 2026/27 IFP Humanities & Social Science (HSS) timetables for Teaching Block 1 taking into account the two different Foundation English Academic Literacies & Languages (FEALL) options - FEALL Entry or FEALL Plus.

We'll officially confirm which FEALL group you're in at the start of our programme, but to give you an idea for now in case you're unsure:

FEALL Entry is for those who have not met the English language conditions for entry into their chosen undergraduate degree programme
FEALL Plus is for those who have met the English language conditions for entry into their undergraduate degree programme and have a certificate that is valid when your chosen programme starts in 2027. Plus students will also take an additional language (a choice of either French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish).

*Please note these timetables are example ones, and could be liable to change slightly before the start of the 2026/27 academic year*
