English language courses
Would you like to improve your academic writing or your skills in listening to lectures and note-taking in English? Would you like to be able to participate more confidently in seminar discussions, work on your oral presentation skills or learn reading strategies to help you deal effectively with large volumes of academic reading? Then try a credit-bearing course at English Language Education for Visiting Students. You will find a supportive environment of peers and teachers with plenty of opportunity to hone and practice your skills. Previous Visiting Students have said how much they enjoyed the space and time afforded by these courses to take their English to a new level and have noted how much the courses helped them improve their performance overall at Edinburgh.

Academic English for Visiting Students 1 (Semester 1) is designed to raise the participants' English language and study skills to the point where they are able to participate fully in courses of their choice offered in undergraduate programmes of study. There are five principal strands: Listening and note-taking; Reading and text analysis; Discussion skills; Academic writing; and Presentation skills.
Academic English for Visiting Students 2 (Semester 2) is designed to increase participants' ability to plan, undertake and report small-scale academic research in written and spoken form. The main course components are: Critical reading and text analysis; Discussion skills; Presentation skills; and work on two Projects (one collaborative and the other individual).
This course is intended for those who wish to develop their English Language skills for use in business contexts and is aimed at students who have a basic understanding of business by having completed a first year UG business course or business-related course (or equivalent) at their home universities. The course is also suitable for students with a science or engineering background but are interested in a business-oriented career, and for UG Year 2 students.
