Opened in 2010 by Nicola Sturgeon, the facility provides a high-quality research environment for investigations into the causes and treatment of dementia, and care provided by relatives and friends.

The Centre provides a high quality environment for dementia research, commissions and develops a balanced portfolio of clinical and scientific research, seeks to attract external dementia research funding, and develops and maintains a brain tissue bank.

In summer 2016, the Centre received a further 5 years' funding from Alzheimer Scotland to continue this important work. A particular focus of the centre is environmental risk factors for dementia, including air pollution and vitamin D.
