Our International Foundation Programme (IFP) is a full-time, one-year programme taught on campus by University of Edinburgh academics and designed to prepare international students, who are not eligible for direct entry, for undergraduate study.

We are now accepting applications for the 2027/28 academic year. For the latest programme updates including invites to upcoming online information sessions, you can subscribe to our mailing list via the link below.

Our international foundation year offers a progression route to more than 180 undergraduate programmes at the University of Edinburgh. Each year, over 95% of our IFP students progress to undergraduate study at our University and elsewhere.

The IFP was immensely helpful with academic skills such as critical thinking. [At undergraduate level], I’m gliding by my peers especially with essay writing. I know the format, I know where things are, how things are supposed to be done.

Risa studied on our programme in 2023/24 and has just finished her second year studying Finance and Business here at University of Edinburgh.

Find out more about her experience on the programme including key skills she learned, which has helped her to thrive at undergraduate level.

Director of Students & IFP Lecturer, Dr Anya Clayworth, shares more about why the University of Edinburgh is the first choice institution for so many students.
