Professor Sarah McGeown Inaugural Lecture The Power and Pleasures of Reading: How Books can Engage, Empower, and Enrich Us, by Professor Sarah McGeown This inaugural lecture celebrates the rich and diverse benefits that accrue from reading books, particularly when we engage deeply with the books that we read. From developing literacy and language skills, to supporting psychological wellbeing, expanding life experiences, and enhancing our knowledge and understanding of the world, ourselves, and others, books can empower, enrich, and inspire us. Yet research demonstrates consistent declines in book reading enjoyment and engagement, and reversing this trajectory is now an urgent issue. Drawing upon her work in research-practice partnerships and participatory approaches, Professor McGeown highlights the extensive benefits that can be gained from reading books, and what we can do, collectively, to support the reading motivation and engagement of younger generations.
