Pickering has a distinguished military and state office career. He served in the US Navy and as a US ambassador in six countries, including Russia, India, Israel, and Jordan. He also served as his country’s ambassador to the United Nations. Ambassador Pickering learned the languages of the countries in which he served. He is fluent in French, Spanish, and Swahili and is proficient in Russian, Hebrew, and Arabic. Ambassador Pickering holds a BA from Bowdoin College, an MALD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and a second MA from the University of Melbourne, Australia, where he studied under a Fulbright Scholarship. In 2012 Ambassador Pickering co-authored a widely circulated article, designed to persuade American citizens that the role of diplomacy was the first resort of kings - and war only the last.
