Details of Professor Mag. Dr Robert Rollinger's Munro Lecture. Event details Lecture title: Greeks and the Achaemenid empire Date: 31 January 200, 5.15pm Venue: Archaeology Lecture Theatre, High School Yards, Infirmary Street Lecture abstract The manifold interrelationships between the Greek “worlds” and the Persian “worlds” have been dealt with extensively in Classical scholarship but generally these treatments only choose one single perspective: it is the perspective of the Greek sources. Yet, as the Greek sources are biased these treatments are biased as well, looking at the “Persians” at first as the enemy and the “other”. In contrast to this kind of approach the talk will choose a different perspective. We will ask the Ancient Near Eastern and Persian sources what they know about Greeks within the Achaemenid empire and how these Greeks are perceived. The sources to be dealt with are written as well as archaeological ones. The prime focus will be on the great Persian residence cities like Pasargadae, Susa and Persepolis with their archaeological and written remains. This article was published on 2024-08-28
