Lecture abstract

Over the last two decades, our knowledge of Neolithic societies in northern France has vastly improved.

This is largely due to the widespread development of rescue archaeology, and the long-term project in the Aisne valley has played a major role in this process.

The lecture will present some of the new data from recent excavations here of sites dating to the early and middle Neolithic, c. 5000-4000 BC.

What did the early longhouse villages look like, at what stage in this sequence did the first monuments appear, and can one see any links between the settlements and the monuments?
