Japanese and Scottish artists unite in special exhibition

The Edinburgh College of Art will host an exhibition of sculptures, paintings, prints, collages and film by 32 artists from Tohoku (Northeastern Japan) and Scotland, in support of the post tsunami recovery.

Tohoku-Scotland

The exhibition is produced by Kate Thomson and Hironori Katagiri of Ukishima Sculpture Studio, and David Moore, Head of Sculpture at the Edinburgh College of Art. The exhibition is in support of the post tsunami recovery in Tohoku by encouraging local artists and their communities, whilst developing cultural links between Scotland, the UK and Japan.

Described as a thousand year event, it will take years for Tohoku (northeastern Japan) and its people to recover from the ‘Great Northeast Japan Earthquake’ and subsequent tsunami and nuclear disaster. The dignity of the Japanese response inspired the world, and this exhibition aims to continue to inspire the international community and give some inspiration back to the people of Tohoku.

The exhibition will take place from 18th - 25th October 2011 at the Sculpture Court at the Edinburgh College of Art in Lauriston Place.

All the art works are for sale: 40% of any sales will be donated by the artists to support projects with Tohoku artists working towards recovery in the regions devastated by the disaster; as will 100% of any benefit from sales of the exhibition's catalogue.
