The University is currently preparing a Gaelic Language Plan that will aim to raise the profile of Gaelic in the University and create practical opportunities for its use. As part of its commitment to increasing Gaelic awareness to students, the University, in association with Clì Gàidhlig, is running an awareness day on Thursday 23 February 2012. The programme The course lasts a full day (0930-1600) and is run through the medium of English. It presumes that delegates have no prior knowledge of Gaelic, although fluent speakers also find the content informative and stimulating. It deals with a variety of issues regarding the language, its history and place in Scotland, its legacy and culture and why it is so highly valued by those struggling to ensure its future. Participants will learn a little about place names, personal names, Gaelic Medium education and the Gaelic Language Act, including the Gaelic Language Plans required to be put in place by public bodies. They will also learn a few simple phrases.
