A film directed by an Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) graduate has been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination. Tali Yankelevich’s documentary, The Perfect Fit, is included in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ eight contenders for the Documentary Short Subject category, of which three to five will earn Oscar nominations. Finlay Pretsell, who produced the film, said: “This is brilliant news and a great recognition of how we’re bringing Scottish documentaries to the world. It’s a huge boost for Tali’s career. We know this is not a nomination yet, but we’re certainly keeping our fingers crossed.” The Perfect Fit looks at the world of ballet through the eyes of the shoemakers, whose aim is to diminish the ballerina’s pain by creating the perfect pair of en pointe shoes. Yankelevich, herself a dancer, said: “To me the shoes were like an instrument of torture and caused me so much pain, but it was a contradiction as I loved dancing. So in this moment I could see that there was a story to be told between those two worlds.” The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced on 10 January 2013.
