Pulitzer prize for 1989 English Literature alumnus

An Edinburgh graduate has been awarded one of journalism's prestigious accolades for his reporting on international affairs.

Reuters journalist Andrew R C Marshall has been honoured in this year’s Pulitzer Prizes, which honour exceptional journalism, literature and musical composition.

The prize has been awarded to Mr Marshall and his Reuters colleague Jason Szep for their series on the oppression of Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar, in South East Asia.

Courageous reports

It is the first ever text Pulitzer Prize to be won by Reuters. The award was given for reports on the violent persecution of the Rohingya, who in efforts to flee Myanmar often fall victim to human-trafficking networks.

Andrew R C Marshall, who graduated with an MA in English Literature in 1989 joined Reuters in January 2012 as Special Correspondent, Thailand and Indochina.

In awarding Reuters the prize for International Reporting, the Pulitzer board commended Jason Szep and Andrew R C Marshall for their "courageous reports".

Respected prizes

The celebrated Pulitzer prizes, awarded by Columbia University, in the City of New York, are the most respected in US journalism. This year is 98th year of the Prizes.

For two years, these Reuters reporters tirelessly investigated terrible human-rights abuses in a forgotten corner of the Muslim world, bringing the international dimensions of the Rohingya to global attention.

What we were writing about was under-reported. I hope through this, there is greater international attention to the risks and presence of religious violence in Myanmar.

Award winning journalism

This month the team also won the 2014 Osborn Elliot Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia.

The $10,000 award by the Asia Society is awarded annually for the best example of written journalism about Asia.

Mr Marshall has explored Asia’s remotest regions for TIME and other magazines and newspapers worldwide, including The Sunday Times Magazine, National Geographic, Esquire(UK), and many others.

He received three Society of Publishers in Asia Awards for Editorial Excellence for his reporting for TIME.
