Student design comes top

A student has won a competition to design the t-shirt motif for a national charity campaign.

Rachel Hill’s artwork was chosen to adorn this year’s Jeans for Genes Day T-shirt, which will be donned by some of the UK’s best-known celebrities, include Kym Marsh, Sam Faiers and Louise Thompson.

The design will also feature in top fashion magazines, such as Vogue, Glamour and Look.

Outstanding quality

Illustration students at Edinburgh College of Art were asked to submit ideas and designs to front Jeans for Genes’ 2014 campaign.

The fashion panel judges included TV presenter Colleen Rooney, actress Jamie Winstone, Stylist Magazine Fashion Director Alexandra Fullerton and founder of the Scottish Fashion Awards, Tessa Hartmann.

The panel was impressed with the quality of all ECA students’ entries, however Rachel’s striking black and gold design won the judges over and was their pick for this year’s T-shirt.

Fellow students, Ellie Walker and Clair Stirling were announced as runners up.

Jeans for Genes Day

Jeans for Genes Day raises money for Genetic Disorders UK - a charity which supports children with genetic conditions and their families.

Each year, people throughout the country are asked to swap their regular work clothes for jeans and T-shirts and make a donation.

The limited edition Jeans for Genes T-shirt also goes on sale to support the campaign, with all profits going to the charity.

T-shirts go on sale later this year and will be available to purchase online or at the University’s Visitor Centre in Bristo Square.

Last year’s winner was also from ECA. Celebrities who wore the winning design included singer Melanie C, Coronation Street’s Michelle Keegan and reality television actress Louise Thompson.
