Edinburgh scholars are among the leading figures from academia, public service, business and the arts joining Scotland’s National Academy. Douglas Cairns, Professor of Classics; Fiona Mackay, Professor of Politics and Director of genderEd; Michela Massimi, Professor of Philosophy of Science and Jo Shaw, Salvesen Professor of European Institutions have been elected Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Prestigious group They join a prestigious group of 66 new Fellows who have demonstrated significant achievements in a broad range of fields. This year’s cohort join the current Royal Society of Edinburgh Fellowship whose varied expertise supports the advancement of learning and knowledge in Scottish public life. The new Fellows include former Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown, the US-based philanthropist and former pianist, Carol Colburn Grigor and Playwright, Screenwriter and Theatre Director, Zinnie Harris. Outstanding contribution New Fellows are elected each year through a rigorous five-stage nomination process. Each year we welcome a selection of nominated extraordinary individuals into the Fellowship and this year is no exception. The diverse range of achievements of these individuals will be an asset to the RSE and I am sure they will strengthen the RSE’s standing as a national academy committed to providing public benefit to Scottish society. I also welcome the increasing number of female Fellows to the RSE, something we have focused on improving in past years and part of our wider commitment to diversity.
