Students learn to make their mark in business

Teams of students will gather this weekend for a 48-hour challenge to develop business solutions for some of society’s biggest challenges.

Running from 8 to 10 February, the Business School’s #makeyourmark scheme brings together undergraduates from across the University to tackle issues such as climate change, homelessness and mental health.

Business leaders, entrepreneurial students and staff will speak at the event, which aims to inspire undergraduates to create businesses that have a positive social impact.

Success story

Those taking part in the two-day challenge have the chance to win ongoing mentorship to develop their ideas.

Aayush Goyal, one of the winners of #makeyourmark 2017, will open this year’s event.

With support from Launch.ed – the University’s team of business advisers – the International Business graduate has launched a company called Social Stories Club, which sells gift boxes of socially-conscious products.

#makeyourmark was eye-opening. I learnt about social entrepreneurship, and the incredible support and initiatives going on in Scotland. That’s how I found out what I wanted to do after graduating.

Innovative programme

The #makeyourmark programme teaches students how to examine companies’ sustainability credentials, build their experience with social enterprises and take advantage of networking opportunities.

The Business School asks students to look at the world with critical eyes, and #makeyourmark is one of the ways we do that. Our first year undergraduates, for instance, begin their time in Edinburgh on a Global Challenges course. Our MBAs take treks to India and Colombia where students learn from large companies and social enterprises.
