Schoolchildren and music students will transform Old College quadrangle for a musical adaptation of an epic tale. Rime of the Ancient Mariner uses Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s 1798 poem of the same name to explore the contemporary plight of refugees. Coleridge’s epic tale about a sailor returning from an arduous sea voyage has been set to music by Dee Isaacs of Edinburgh College of Art. Pupils from Leith Walk Primary School will take part in the outdoor promenade show with students from the Music in the Community programme at Reid School of Music and a professional cast. Ms Isaacs and her students have been working with the Leith Walk pupils to stage the performance that has been written by award-winning artist Gerda Stevenson and directed by John Bett. Music in the Community Music in the Community was set up by Professor Nigel Osborne in 1991 in response to a growing need for music to be more accessible across the community. It aims to inform both the scientific understanding and practical application of music as an educational, therapeutic, artistic and social tool. Students undertake a two year programme of training, which includes a supervised weekly placement in a community setting.
