Art and Design Year 2 entry

Information and advice on gaining entry to Year 2 of our Art and Design degrees.

We accept applications for direct entry into Year 2 for our Art and Design degrees. All applicants must meet Year 1 entry requirements as detailed in that section, in addition to holding a qualification which allows them to apply directly to Year 2.

Applicants who have achieved one grade away from the Year 1 minimum are still eligible to apply, but are less competitive than applicants who have achieved the Year 1 entry requirements. 

Foundation Diplomas (sometimes referred to as FADs) are often mixed medium and encapsulate many different artistic skills. They are available at colleges and universities throughout the country, and are a year in duration.

When the Year 1 requirements have been met, we’ll accept the following Foundation Diplomas for direct entry to Year 2:

  • ABC Foundation Diploma at Merit
  • BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma at Merit
  • BTEC Level 4 Foundation Diploma at Pass
  • Leith School of Art Foundation Course at Merit
  • The Kings Foundation Year Diploma in Fine and Applied Art at Merit
  • UAL Level 3 Foundation Diploma at Merit
  • UAL Level 4 Foundation Diploma at Pass
  • WJEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma at Merit

The subjects we accept the above qualifications in are as follows:

  • Art and Design
  • Art and Design and Media Practise
  • Creative Digital Media
  • Creative Digital Media Production

SQA Higher National Diplomas are taught at colleges throughout Scotland. Applicants are required to achieve a B in the graded unit. We accept a wide range of HNC qualifications:

  • 3D Computer Animation
  • 3D Design
  • Animation
  • Art and Design 
  • Audio Visual Technology
  • Contemporary Art Practise
  • Computer Arts and Design
  • Costume for Stage and Screen (for Performance Costume only)
  • Creative Industries
  • Fashion
  • Furniture Production (for Product Design only)
  • Jewellery
  • Media Analysis and Production (for Animation and Film and TV only)
  • Photography
  • Textiles
  • Visual Communication

We do NOT accept the following subjects:

  • Display Design
  • Games Development
  • Digital Design
  • Performing Arts
  • Interactive Media Design
  • Fashion Business
  • Computer Aided Draughting and Design

Sometimes colleges can name these qualifications differently, but they follow one of the frameworks listed above. If your HND has a different name, please email a link to the qualification. We will let you know if it is one we can accept.
